Every year around the holidays I’m sure you think to yourself that you need to plan a winter family photoshoot. Well with it being one of the busiest times of the year, likely it often gets put on the back burner and forgotten. While the holidays are such a busy time of year, it is also a time when you may be seeing family you haven’t seen in a while or your kids come home from college.
This year will be different. I want you to make your winter family photoshoot a priority so that you have the memories of this holiday season to look back on years from now. In this blog, I talk about 3 reasons why a winter family photoshoot needs to be on your calendar this year!

1. Beautiful Backdrop
While there are so many different times of year that are beautiful for family photos, winter offers such a warm and cozy feel to your family photos. The wintery landscape provides the perfect backdrop for your winter family photoshoot. And if there is snow on the ground, that is even better as it really creates a nice contrast in the photos.
2. Fun Winter Activities for the Family
Just because you are doing a family photoshoot doesn’t mean you can’t include some fun winter activities. I actually prefer it if my clients choose to do an activity during the photoshoot because then I can capture the raw and fun-filled candid moments. The REAL smiles and laughs. Here are a few ideas for some activities you could do during your winter family photoshoot:
- Play in the Snow, build a snowman, snowball fight
- Ice Skating
- Cozy bonfire outside
- Do an in-home session and bake with your little ones

3. Holiday Cards
If you’re wanting to send out Holiday cards this year, then a winter family photoshoot makes so much sense. You can make it festive or just more of a warm and cozy feel. It’s also a great excuse just to get some family photos in general!

4. Family is in town
If you don’t get to see a lot of your family very often and they come to town for the holidays, capture this special time with a family photoshoot. I know how hard it can be to get your family altogether so take advantage of this time with some family photos. It will be so special to look back on years from now!

5. More Availability
As a Vancouver Island photographer my schedule really fills up in the summer and fall months so it can be much more difficult to book a session. But, in the winter I don’t have near as many weddings so that opens up my availability a ton for family photoshoots.
