Newborn Photography At Home Session in Victoria BC
The James Family reached out to me on a Sunday afternoon asking about Newborn Photography. They realized, ‘hey, we just had our baby and we never booked a photographer to capture it.’ Luckily, I try to be a flexible Newborn Photographer. Sometimes babies come early, late, or right on time.
I booked this family for an At-Home Newborn Photography Session that Thursday and it went swimmingly. In terms of Newborn Photoshoots, my style is very natural. I love when the family can hang out and be in awe of the newest member of their family.
This Newborn Photography Session was exactly what I could ever hope for in a shoot like this. We shared a peaceful afternoon and little baby Waylon was alert and happy the whole session.
As a Newborn Photographer, my goal is to capture the family in the most natural way possible, focusing on the precious time in the family’s life. There are too few days like this. Life goes by so fast. I want them to be able to cherish these photos for the rest of time. I want baby Waylon to look at these photos when he is 20 years old and see how unbelievably cute and small he used to be. And how his sister held him, how much love was in his parents’ eyes while they held him, how tiny his little hands were and how soft his little arm rolls looked.

When Should I Book A Newborn Photographer?
I recommend booking a Newborn photographer 1-3 month before your due date. It’s great for your photographer to have lots of time to plan a good date and make sure they can be accommodating to moving the date around. Like I mentioned, sometimes babies come early or late!
There are different types of newborn photography shoots.
A) You can book one for the week you come home. This would be right away so that your baby is mostly sleeping with their eyes closed. Babies are most ‘flexible’ during this time so it’s easy to move them around, wrap them up, get all those cute sleeping photos.
B) The other option is booking a few weeks after your due date. This way, your baby will most likely be very awake and aware of the session. I love this time because you can get the cute smiles, and see their beautiful eyes!
I am happy to accommodate either of these types of sessions! Like I said above, we booked this particular session within 5 days of when the James Family reached out.

Newborn Photography Session Outfit Ideas
As with most sessions, clients are always asking what to wear! My personal opinion is never to match exactly but to wear complementary coloured clothing. As a Victoria BC Photographer, I love all things natural colours! Things that would match the forests and oceans surrounding the area.
The James Fam nailed this one. You can see they wore really natural tones (Grey, brown, orange, blue) which are super appealing to the eye. Waylon was the star of the show and really popped with his orange outfit. Their outfits also matched the tones of their home which helped accentuate everything.
I love the idea of casual, comfortable clothing for your at home newborn photography session. You just got back from literally giving birth, let’s get comfy.

Clothing or Skin?
I highly recommend some form of skin-to-skin contact during your newborn photoshoot. I think these make for the most beautiful newborn photos. This could be a mix of your baby nude or in their diaper, and a mix of one or both parents topless or in their underwear. The skin-on-skin connection with your newborn is something special, and it’s a moment to be cherished.
Also, photos of you breastfeeding are important as well. If you are comfortable with this, you can definitely incorporate it into your newborn session.
